Once the accident occurred, 300,000 people were evacuated from their homes. Today, there is a 770 mile-wide Chernobyl Exclusion Zone that is considered unsafe for any human life/agricultural endeavors. Much of this includes Ukraine and Belarus — though some in small, rural villages still live within contaminated zones. Interestingly enough, Chernobyl was Ukraine’s first nuclear power plant.
