In August 1934, just three months before Charles was born, Kathleen married a man named William Eugene Manson. Manson, who worked at a dry cleaning business, wasn’t around for long. Sick and tired of Kathleen’s drinking habits, Manson filed for divorce in April 1937. Manson cited Kathleen’s tendency to leave him with the baby while she went out to party, and the court accepted his charge of ‘gross neglect of duty’ — making Manson a free man.
